Anatomy
The elbow is a medium-sized hinged joint that connects the lower end of the humerus (arm bone) to the radius and ulna (forearm bones). It gets its stability from over 20 muscles and numerous tendons and ligaments which work to connect and hold the bones of the elbow together.
In fact, cartilage is what directly protects these bones and enables them to move and absorb shock. The joint capsule is a fluid-filled sac that surrounds and lubricates the joint.
If anything happens to any of these parts of the nerves and blood vessels around them, it can cause pain and irritation. Aging and overuse may also cause pain that limits the joint’s ability to function as the upper extremity hinged joint.
