Anatomy

The knee is the largest joint in the human body and a common source of athletic-related injuries. Classified as a pivotal hinge joint, the knee allows for straightening and bending in one direction, with some twisting. It is made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bursae, and meniscus. The lower end of the femur (thighbone), the upper end of the tibia (shinbone), and the patella (kneecap) are the three bones that comprise the knee joint.

In a healthy knee, the back of the kneecap and femur are covered in articular cartilage, allowing the two bones to move against one another without friction or pain. The quadriceps muscles and hamstring muscles provide most of the power and control for the knee. Both muscle groups are vital to forward motion. Injuries to these muscle groups can range from mild strains and bruises to debilitating tears.
