Shoulder Care

The shoulder specialists at Gunderson Orthopedics in Oklahoma City are fellowship-trained and specialize in diagnosing conditions affecting the shoulder joint. Whatever your unique injury or situation, we’ll identify the underlying cause and create a customized treatment plan to get you moving again.

Anatomy

The shoulder is a complex and versatile joint. It is made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle). The shoulder joint can move in several directions, allowing us to push, pull, lift, throw and more.

The joint is formed by the humerus (upper arm bone) articulating (moving against) the scapula (shoulder blade). To reduce friction in the shoulder joint, several synovial bursae are present. A bursa is a synovial fluid filled sac, which acts as a cushion between tendons and other joint structures. This ball and socket allow the shoulder joint to be the most mobile joint in the human body.

As such a mobile joint, proper function of the shoulder is essential for almost all daily activities. Most shoulder problems fall into four categories: inflammation, instability, arthritis, and fractures.
